CDR Pompe will develop a model to study pump operating conditions, improving performance and market fit. High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure and engineering tools will be used, with EnginSoft providing CFD modelling expertise and CINECA providing hardware and cloud support.

Start date: 01/06/2021

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

CDR plans to redesign four magnetic drive chemical-process pumps to improve performance, reduce costs, and comply with market regulations. Key improvements include reducing axial force, cavitation, energy consumption, and achieving a compromise between efficiency and performance.

Goals

Virtual prototyping

Challenges

The simulation tools, know-how, and HPC infrastructure required for these design improvements were not available to CDR.

Innovation results

CDR and EnginSoft conducted the experiment using CFD modelling and optimization for four pump sizes, aiming to find the best compromise between geometry fidelity, accuracy, and computational costs. The results improved pump performance in critical situations and provided new knowledge.

Business impact

CDR Pompe's magnetic pump models have significantly improved energy efficiency, lifetime, and robustness. These improvements allow access to the US market, which is the primary market for centrifugal pumps. CDR and EnginSoft expect additional EUR 1.5 M turnover in the pump design sector.
