The modelling of Magnetic Smart Materials and Processes is a complex task that involves simulating the microstructure of complex fluids. Electric Ant Lab has developed a software package which performs such simulations, but company as Ioniqa requires such small scales that simulations would take years to complete.

Start date: 01/07/2013

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

Electric Ant Lab (EAL) has developed RheoCube for detailed fluid simulation on CPU-based HPC systems. However, high-fidelity simulation of Magnetic Smart Materials requires much smaller resolution, which would take 10 years. The project aims in porting this software on modern GPU accelerated HPC systems.

Goals

New services

Challenges

The challenge is to port TheoCube on GPU to drastically speed up smart material simulation in the order of days instead of years. Moreover, the service has to provide high-resolution simulations to material scientists unfamiliar with advanced simulation techniques, in a simple framework on Cloud-based HPC.

Innovation results

A user interface familiar to material scientists has been developed, allowing them run experiments on a Cloud-based-HPC backend system. Post-processing libraries, visualization, and analysis frameworks support user interpretation of results. The interface manages the interface with the HPC backend.

Business impact

EAL anticipates a net profit of 400k€ over five years, boosted by consulting income and RheoCube SaaS provision. From 2022, annual profit is expected to be 550k€. SURFsara's revenue stream is expected to double annually.
