Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecom cables, is seeking to scale up its simulations of high-voltage power-transmission cables. The end-user needs to model the physical behavior of these cables, requiring new competence and tools. A successful, cost-effective cloud-based HPC simulation would represent a breakthrough for Prysmian.

Start date: 01/07/2013

Duration in months: 18

Problem Description

Prysmian's goal was to develop a 3D solution for simulations in order to obtain finer simulations than those obtained using 2D models.

Goals

Virtual prototyping

Challenges

The challenge of this case study was to satisfy the need for new and finer simulations through the use of Cloud-based HPC 3-D simulations.

Innovation results

Prysmian has improved its design capability by incorporating third-party and open-source simulation packages into a Cloud-based HPC system. This has led to better calculations of losses in energy cables and better modeling of heat transfer. Cloud-based HPC simulations enable more detailed, faster simulations, making them feasible on a network of workstations.

Business impact

Prysmian suggests that using a Cloud-based HPC system can save 30% per annum on cycle costs, compared to an in-house system costing €150K, amortised over 3 years, and €40K in additional operational costs.
